More than 30 horses were rescued by firefighters from a barn fire in Bricket Wood in the early hours of the morning.

The fire was discovered at 11.40pm at Little Munden Farm in School Lane.

Firefighters arrived to discover half of the building alight and the horses trapped in one end.

Using jets of water they created a "fire break" between the fire and the trapped animals which they were then able to lead them to safety with help from Little Munden staff.

Two members of Little Munden staff received superficial burns to their faces and one of them needed hospital treatment.

Six appliances were called to the blaze which was deemed to be under control by 3am.

Water had to be drawn from a hydrant and a nearby river to provide a "water curtain" to prevent radiating heat from allowing the fire to spread to adjacent buildings.

A mechanical digger under the protection of water jets was also used to move straw from the barn to prevent that catching light too.

Firefighters remain on the scene while the fire burns out.
