Hundreds gathered at Battersea Park's peace pagoda today in support of the monks' protest in Burma.

It was the final destination for a group of marchers who set out from Trafalgar Square this morning to take a stand against the brutal suppression of anti-government demonstrations in Burma.

Among the supporters, who numbered around 350, were about 12 monks.

The venerable Ajah Khemadhammo addressed the crowd, saying: "By gathering here we are showing that we know and care what is happening on the streets of Burma.

"We show that we support the courage and bravery of the monks.

"We gather to show our belief that they and their loving kindness will win through."

One bystander said: "There were people with drums and flags.

"Some people were praying, and others were listening to what the monks had to say.

"The atmophere was optimistic."
