The piano on which John Lennon composed Imagine could be taken to the site of a murder.

Organisers of the Imagine Piano Peace Project aim to offer a message of hope by placing the piano at the spot where Stephen Lawrence was killed.

Stephen was 18 when he was murdered at a bus stop in Well Hall Road, Eltham, in 1993.

Pop singer George Michael owns the piano after buying it at auction for £1.45m in 2000.

It is currently being taken on a tour of spots in the US where tragedies have occurred - including Virginia Tech, where Seung-Hui Cho killed 32 people in April before committing suicide.

A picture of the piano is taken at each site and Mr Michael and his partner, Kenny Goss, owner of the Goss Gallery in Dallas, have asked for Imagine to be performed on the piano at each stop.

Caroline True, the creative director of the project, said: "Kenny and George's deepest wish is to imagine a world of peace, a world without violence.

"Capturing these images of this piano on which a song of peace was composed is the heart of this project."

Ms True says dates and the exact format for the UK leg of the project are so far unconfirmed but says the place of Stephen's murder is on the list of places being considered.

She says the tour will go to public places "where awful things have happened all over England" and other planned visits include the sites of the July 7 London bombings.

A documentary and a book of the images are under development, with plans to donate proceeds from them to charity.

A spokesman for the Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust said: "It is a good thought but I am not sure about the location."

  • No-one has been convicted of Mr Lawrence's murder. The Metropolitan Police investigation which followed led to an inquiry which concluded there was institutional racism in the force.
