A widow has paid tribute to her husband who was killed in a collision with a bus.

Bus driver Henry Walker, 64, died after being struck by a bus on his way home from his last day at work before he retired.

The accident happened on the A20 Sidcup section at the Fiveways junction, in Eltham.

Mr Walker's white Ford Escort van and a bus were travelling in the opposite direction along Green Lane, when they collided.

Widow Marion Walker, who was married to Mr Walker for 45 years, said: "It's ironic, 30 years as a bus driver and it was a bus that took him out.

"It was his last day at work before he retired."

He sustained serious chest injuries in the 11.30pm crash on June 21.

Paramedics treated him at the scene before he was taken by air ambulance to the Royal London Hospital.

But the grandfather-of-nine died in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Mrs Walker, of Beanshaw, Eltham, says her husband was a hard-working man who was looking forward to his retirement.

The 64-year-old cleaner added: "He was so well liked by everyone.

"He was someone who was once seen, never forgotten.

"He will be sorely missed.

"I just want to thank everyone for their support, especially my family and friends. It's been amazing.

"I just can't put into words the kindness of people."

Mr Walker, who was a father-of-four, will be buried on July 11- three days before his 65th birthday.

The 42-year-old bus driver and four passengers received minor injuries and were treated at a nearby hospital before being released.

The incident is being investigated by the Collision Investigation Unit, based at Catford Traffic Garage.

Sergeant Alan Adams said: "This is a busy road at all times of day and night.

"I am appealing for any witnesses, whether in a bus or private vehicle or pedestrians, who may have been near the scene at the time of the incident, to contact us."

The vehicles involved were a Ford Escort Van, registration J423VOJ, and a DAF Double Deck Bus, registration Y464UGC, operated by Arriva.

There have been no arrests and enquiries continue.

A post-mortem examination on Mr Walker was due to take place today at Greenwich mortuary.
