"Sinking to new depths" might not be a phrase normally associated with record holders.
But a Wandsworth diving champion did just that to smash the British women's freediving record by descending 65 metres underwater (equivalent to 22 storeys) on one lungful of air.
Sara Campbell, 35, a relative newcomer to freediving, broke the previous record of 54 metres for the feat, during four days of attempts in the Red Sea at Dahab, Egypt, earlier this month.
She performed the freedive with a fin attached to her, which enabled her to swoop mermaid-like towards the sea bed, propelling herself downwards.
She also plummeted 62 metres with no fins to break the woman's record of 50 metres and the men's record of 60 metres for this type of freedive.
