Michael Enright has suffered months of agony since he and his dog were mown down by a drunk driver outside Tiffin School, south-west London, in October. But the last thing he expected was to be asked to pick up the bill for the damage.

Michael, 42, from Kingston, spent more than a month in hospital with horrific leg injuries after the collision in the small hours of October 14, as he walked his beloved dog Deefa home from a friends's house.

A Nissan Skyline driven by Alexander Shirinyants, 19, of Charter Quay, Kingston, mounted the pavement, smashing into a wall and killing Deefa - a collie and Staffordshire bull terrier cross who he got from a rescue centre.

Shirinyants pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol and was banned from driving for a year.

Michael thought the ordeal was behind him, but on Thursday he received a letter from Kingston Council telling him the bill for a damaged wall and fence at Tiffin School would be sent to him. It also asked for the cost of disposing of Deefa's body after Michael was rushed unconscious to hospital.

Michael, a car valeter from York Road, said: "I think it's disgusting and I'm really angry about it.

"I lost my dog and my foot was practically ripped off - they had to get me out from underneath the car. I had to have skin grafts, was on crutches for months and still can't work. I'm due another operation in September.

"It was the driver's fault, I didn't do anything. They said they send these letters to everyone, but what if it was a child that got killed instead of a dog?"

Kingston Council said police had informed it that Mr Enright was the owner of the car, and it still had an outstanding bill for the damage - but refused to reveal the sum.

A spokesman said: "The council acted in good faith, using information from an accident report which was unfortunately incorrect.

"We apologise wholeheartedly for any distress caused to Mr Enright and will be making this known to him."

A police spokesman said: "Due to a clerical error Mr Enright's name was entered onto a form which was sent to the local authority. We are contacting Mr Enright to resolve this matter."
