A foul-mouthed West Ham fan has been banned from attending matches after police secured a three-year order against him for antisocial behaviour.

Paul Connaughton, 32, of Streatham, received the order after subjecting Chelsea fans and British Transport Police officers to a tirade of verbal abuse at Plaistow Tube station following West Ham's 4-1 defeat at Upton Park on April 18.

The order, issued by Stratford Magistrates' Court, prevents Connaughton from travelling by train to any town or city where West Ham or the English national team are playing.

It also bans him from travelling on the Tube through any London borough which West Ham or the national team are playing for two hours before and four houes after the match as well as entering specific geographical locations around football grounds.

BTP Inspector Chris Horton said: "Connaughton was singing extremely offensive chants at Chelsea fans and while we're not here to spoil the fun, people have the right to travel on the underground and go about their business without being subjected to offensive behaviour or abusive language.

"Abusive behaviour will not be tolerated on the railway and if people choose to behave this way they will be proactively dealt with.

"The robust banning order handed down to Connaughton shows just how seriously football-related disorder is treated by BTP and the courts."
