Pedal power proved invaluable when a police officer commandeered a bicycle to chase a suspect.

PC Geoff McCreery and Det Con James Baker, both based at Gravesend police station, were in Dartford on April 24.

They were making inquiries about a series of street robberies by a gang, mostly of children's mobile phones, in the Dartford Heath area.

As they drove away, they spotted a group of youths suspected of being involved in the muggings.

However, when they stopped their car and approached the group, three of the youths ran off.

The officers gave chase on foot along Heath Lane, but the youths were too quick for them.

PC McCreery, 26, from Gravesend, said: "We were both in suits on a hot day. As you can imagine, they were a bit more athletic than us."

The chase passed two boys aged about 13 in Shepherds Lane, where PC McCreery commandeered a BMX bicycle.

He said: "We identified ourselves and I asked to borrow his bike. He was more than willing to help.

"I'm 16st. Not quite the preferred size for a BMX."

However, within minutes, PC McCreery caught up with one of the suspects and arrested him. The 15-year-old has since been bailed.

The other two youths got away but have since been arrested and also released on police bail.

PC McCreery added: "Officers join the police to drive fast cars rather than borrow kids' bikes."

A Kent police spokesman said: "We'd like to thank the rider who kindly donated his bike."

Kent Police are appealing for witnesses to the muggings. Call investigating officer Det Con Baker on 01474 565061 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
