A GOLF course has been left in a "hideous" state after a stolen car was driven across it smashing fences and churning up greens.

Cray Valley Golf Course, in Sandy Lane, Orpington, was the scene of a police pursuit on Monday night after a stolen jeep tore through it.

The blue Cherokee was spotted by police at 10.15pm in St Mary Cray High Street and was followed into Main Road, then into Sandy Lane.

It then turned into the course and drove across it for around a mile, before crashing at the bottom of the course.

Two suspects fled the wreck, evading the police.

Last month, a stolen Shogun jeep made an almost identical dash across the course with the police in hot pursuit.

Fences were wrecked in both incidents and both cars were abandoned on the course, needing to be removed later.

Club manager Simon Bradbrook said: "The club was closed when the latest incident happened, but when I came in on Tuesday morning the ninth green looked hideous."

"Most of it is in the fairways, there's lots of tyre tracks but the most damage is to the ninth green.

"They drove straight across it. It's still open, but it's not a putting surface, you can't play on it."

Mr Bradbrook, who joined the club seven months ago says the club is now planning to install a £800 barrier fence around the course to prevent further incidents.

He said: "It's hard to believe this has happened twice in such a short time.

"All we can do is put this barrier up and try to keep them out.

"This happens to a lot of golf courses, most of them are open and easily accessible.

"It's very frustrating and a huge inconvenience for the fee paying public.

"Plus it is not a good image for the course."
