Police swooped on the homes of suspected football hooligans on Thursday last week after they allegedly saw CCTV footage of men beating another fan unconscious.

A series of dawn raids around Barnet and Hertfordshire led to the arrest of five Barnet fans, who are accused of beating up a Bristol Rovers fan after the first match of the season on August 6 last year, held at Underhill.

Daniel Bunton, 28, a supervisor from Northbrook Road, Barnet; John Andrew Hobley, 37, a bookmaker from Cannons Court, Puckeridge, Hertfordshire; Dean Martin, 21, a builder from Leeside, Barnet; Robert Mackenzie, 22, a locksmith, from Hertford Road, Barnet; and Robert Healy, 37, a warehouse operative from Thirlby Road, Burnt Oak, 37, were all charged on June 9 with violent disorder.

The accused fans were said to have been drinking outside the Queen's Head pub in Great North Road, Barnet, when the altercation occurred.

A police spokesman, said: "He the Bristol Rovers fan was hospitalised but thankfully his injuries were not as serious as was first feared and he was released after treatment for cuts and bruises."

PC Andy Wigley, football liaison officer for Barnet police, said: "Barnet police will not tolerate random and unprovoked acts of violence of this kind."
