A FREE event where Londoners can wait to hear which city has been chosen to host the 2012 Olympic Games is being held in Trafalgar Square.

Dame Kelly Holmes, Steve Cram and a host of London 2012 Ambassadors will be at the event on Wednesday July 6.

Organisers say they are determined to show their gratitude for support for the London 2012 bid even if the capital is not chosen to host the games.

Giant screens will show the nail-biting events unfolding live from Singapore.

Former M People singer Heather Small will be in the Square belting out the London bid anthem, "Proud", backed by community choirs.

Dame Kelly today said: "I am an active ambassador and big supporter of the London 2012 bid, and am delighted that I will be with everyone in Trafalgar Square on July 6.

"The race to host the Games is very close and it will be an exciting day."

Dame Kelly added: "Whatever the outcome, London's bid has been a fantastic campaign that has really got the people of London and the whole of the UK involved and resulted in lots of benefits for sport and the country.

"As a nation we are passionate about sport, and I know we could host a fantastic Games. I really look forward to being part of the crowd on the day."

Lord Sebastian Coe, London 2012 Chairman, said: "I am very pleased people will be able to gather in Trafalgar Square for this historic decision.

"It is also an opportunity for London 2012 to say 'thank you' to everyone who has supported the Bid. Their backing has given us a real chance of winning."

The event, called Thank You London, Thank You UK, will run from 12-2pm and celebrate all that has been achieved by London's Bid to host the 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games.

It is also to thank Londoners and the rest of the UK for their support over the last two years.

The event is being organised by London 2012 and the Mayor of London.
