Anti-racism concert in south London

Chart-topping R'n'B star Lemar will be one of the acts to perform at an anti-racism concert in south London.

The multicultural festival Rise, backed by the Mayor and the National Assembly Against Racism (NAAR), is to be held in Burgess Park on July 16.

Over the last five years, the free event has become the biggest of its kind in Europe.

"Figures from the Metropolitan Police show that racist incidents in London have fallen by 35 per cent in the last five years," said London Mayor Ken Livingstone. "But we cannot be complacent. There are still 35 racist crimes in London every day.

"Whatever community we belong to, we should come together to send a clear signal that racism will not be tolerated in London," he added.

NAAR co-ordinator Milena Buyum said Rise "will be a true festival of multicultural Britain and help drive back further the racists".

Other artists include London MC Kano, soul-jazz singer Eska and Jamaican vocalist Horace Andy.
