Hertfordshire fire and ambulance services have issued a safety warning following the death of a dog in a frozen lake.
Firefighters were called to Fairlands Valley Lake in Stevenage just after 10am today when a dog fell through the ice and in to the cold water.
Staff at the lakes broke through the ice and used a boat to retrieve the dog from the water.
Firefighters and paramedics used oxygen and heart massage to try to revive the dog, but resuscitation attempts were unsuccessful and sadly the dog died.
District Commander for Stevenage and North Herts Dave Harold, who attended the incident, said: “This tragic incident highlights the dangers of walking across frozen lakes, both for people and animals.
"It’s impossible to tell how thick the ice is and how deep the water is underneath, and our advice is to stay well clear.
“Although it might seem like a bit of fun, this incident highlights the tragic consequences that can occur.”
In a separate incident yesterday, two young men plunged in to the very same lake after ice cracked beneath them.
Communications manager for the East of England Ambulance Service Gary Sanderson said: “On this occasion the two lads were very lucky indeed to crawl out to a place of safety.
"They were both hospitalised following their ordeal. We urge the public to stay well away from anywhere which is frozen over.”
