A mother of four children is attempting to make 100,000 ribbons in aid of tragic tot Baby P.

A 17-month-old baby, referred to as Baby P, died in August last year after suffering a catalogue of injuries, including a broken back, fractured ribs, and a missing tooth.

On November 11 a jury at the Old Bailey found the mother's 32-year-old live-in boyfriend, who cannot be named for legal reasons, and their lodger Jason Owen, aged 36, from Bromley, guilty of causing or allowing the death of the baby.

When Rachel McCook, of Hardings Crescent, Woolwich, heard the news of Baby P’s tragic death she was inspired to join campaign group Justice for Baby P on a social networking website.

The group is calling for action against social workers and police officers involved in the case and for the Government to change the law to prevent other children from suffering a similar fate.

The 34-year-old mother of four said: “I was just shocked and disgusted when I heard about Baby P and I couldn’t believe anyone would do something like that. Having a 21-month-old baby meant I was really affected.”

Mrs McCook has now started a petition, with 100 signatures so far, and is making 100,000 blue ribbons for protestors to wear on a march organised by the internet group on December 13.

She is also selling some of the ribbons for £1 each to raise money for the group which wants to raise £5,000 to become a registered charity.

She said: “I’ve made a couple of hundred ribbons already using my own money and have raised at least £100.

“I would like people to be more aware of the situation. We need to do something to make a difference and even just buying a ribbon for £1 you can imagine how much money we could raise.”
