War veterans are to be issued with Oyster cards to travel free around London.

The Veterans' Concessionary Travel Scheme (VCTS) has just been launched, allowing all UK war veterans and their dependants to travel for free on buses, the Underground, DLR, trams and London overground services.

This scheme is of particular benefit to veterans under 60 and those who live outside London who are not eligible for a Freedom Pass - which is open to older or disabled London residents.

It will be available to those who receive an ongoing payment under the War Pensions Scheme or income from the Armed Forces Compensation Scheme.

War widows, war widowers and dependants in receipt of the same payments will also be eligible.

Eligible applicants - about 2,600 in London - will be issued with an Oyster photocard, which will be valid for four years and will save them about £200 a year in travel costs.
