A man has died after being hit by an 80mph train travelling through Surbiton station last night.

Police are not treating the death as suspicious as the man, described as white and between 30 and 50-years-old, was seen walking “purposefully” on to the tracks from platform two.

The station was closed between 10pm and 11.45pm while emergency services attended the scene.

Trains were able to pass through the station on one line, causing delays of up to half-an-hour.

The body was taken to Kingston coroners’ office and it is expected to take several days to identify. An inquest is likely to be opened and adjourned early next week.

Chris Commell from British Transport Police said: “We will be working on getting some statements for the inquest but we are not dealing with it as a crime.

“This is a tragic incident and our thoughts go out to the members of his immediate family.”

It is the second death on the tracks at Surbiton station in three months.

Battersea woman Christine Johnson, 45, was killed while crossing between platforms two and three on August 8 this year.
