News of terror attacks, break ins and traffic chaos can be sent straight to residents thanks to a new early warning system from Merton police.
The CommunitySafe programme, a Met Police scheme that has recently been introduced in the borough, will allow warnings and alerts to be sent via email and text message.
The system will also feature information and advice about crime in the local area.
Residents can choose how they receive the alerts.
Email updates are free, but text messages will incur a charge for users.
Subscribers can also get news via their pager.
Users can also select what sort of information they want to receive by joining different groups for each type of alert.
A police spokesman said: “The system gives early warning of critical incidents affecting your area, with regular updates when required.
“In the failed attacks in late June 2007, CommunitySafe subscribers were notified six hours before the national press reported the incident.”
