Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, has targeted youth crime and quality of life for Londoners as priorities for his first budget.

The Mayor's budget priorities were published today (July 22).

The document confirmed that resources will be directed to his immediate priorities - preventing youth crime, delivering value for money and improving the quality of life of all Londoners.

Mr Johnson said: "Tackling crime, delivering value for money and improving the quality of life in London are my administration's top priorities.

"Crime is the number one issue for Londoners.

"I will build on the early measures I have introduced such as the alcohol ban on the tube and extra 440 safer transport police officers.

"Tackling the long-term root causes of crime and violence and ensuring a visible police presence on the streets must become the priority for the entire GLA group.

He added: "Delivering greater value for money is vital and it is clear there are a series of areas where the GLA and LDA can be improved and made far more efficient.

"We have already showed through scrapping the Londoner that savings can be made.

"That's why I am proposing a 15 per cent saving in the GLA budget to ensure we are providing maximum value for London taxpayers.

He also reaffirmed a commitment to reduce CO2 by 60 per cent by 2025.

Mr Johnson said: "I have taken a series of decisions to improve the quality of life in London since I was elected in May such as scrapping the Londoner newspaper to fund 10,000 new trees and measures to improve run down parks and open spaces.

"I will continue this work to improve everyday life in the capital with better housing and protection for open spaces."

The Mayor will issue a draft budget for consultation in December and present the draft budget proposals to the London Assembly in January.

My priority for London would be to get a decent mayor elected to replace the clown who currently holds the position.

Better to have a 'clown' in charge than someone who was so blatantly corrupt.

Z Rift, do you really think Boris Johnson is whiter than white?

He's a Tory for God's sake!

No idea what is meant by 'whiter than white' (is anyone?). As for being a Tory, as long as he tries to clean up the complete mess left by his predecessor surely it matters not what party he belongs to?

Complete mess? In what way?

(And try answering without re-hashing a headline from the Daily Mail)

Puppet Johnson's tenure is already looking like a shambles and he's barely started.

If it's mess we're talking about, just wait and see the state he (or, I should say, Conservative party head office) leave things in.

Mess? You are joking surely.... where do I start. 'Ken' was completely self serving - image over any substance, a soundbite politician who believed people cared what he had to say... he had not a clue what most of his senior staff were doing, never seemed to get the fact that LONDON is more than just the city.... I'd like someone to tell me what he did achieve.. oh that's it the congestion charge and bendy buses....whoppee
(Is that more Daily Mirror for you?)

Nope, still Daily Mail by the sounds of it.

Must pick you up on your suggestion Ken was a 'soundbite politician'. Indeed, it was the fact that he actually carried out his policies (and didn't just talk about them) that got up people's noses (you mentioned the congestion charge yourself).

Also, what's happened to Johnson's senior staff? One sacked, one resigned - both in disgrace. Not great is it?

And if it's soundbites you're talking about, you only need to look at the facade that is the 'ban on alcohol on the tube'.

No one to enforce it and precisely zero impact on reducing crime or anti-social behaviour.

But the Daily Mail/Evening Standard brigade lap it up.

More fool them.

Ken Livingstone is a good politician particularly when he was head of the GLC. In those days he would listen carefully to the collective London voices and give them what they needed to go about their daily lives. Unfortunately he forgot about his grass roots and ignored the collective voice of Londoner so they deselected him. Boris is different but he should be given a chance in the same way that Ken had his all those years ago.[

No he shouldn't. He should be subject to the same media bear-baiting as Livingstone was.
