A petition has been set up to abolish the Dartford Crossing toll charges.

So far, 235 people have signed the petition on the Downing Street website.

The news comes after the Government proposed plans to increase the standard fare to use the crossing from £1 to £1.50.

Conservative MP for Gravesend Adam Holloway, who is campaigning against the toll, recently called the rise "unworkable".

The new petition, set up by Havering councillor Cllr Clarence Barrett, calls for the toll to be scrapped "as soon as is practicable".

It says the toll causes congestion on both sides, leads to environmental damage from cars waiting in line and increases business and transport costs.

What a Joke!!!
...The government pledged that the "toll" was a temporary measure that would be scrapped once the cost of building the QE2 bridge had been recovered , a pledge they decided not to honour once they realised what a nice litle gold mine it was. So now instead of scrapping the fee as promised, they increase it!! Lovely.

I remember when the bridge was built we were told it would be "toll free" after it had finished paying for itself- another Government lie.

It is not necessary to have toll booths both sides of the river, if a toll must be levied double the charge and pay one way, just like going to Wales. When the congestion tails back to Swanley, stop taking money and get the traffic moving.I am sick of the pollution and sheer waste of precious fuel, why is this situation allowed to exist, a few days of action and this problem would be resolved.

We're all being squeezed dry with penalties of one kind or another. Legally driven cars are easy touches for the powers that be. We log into the system and they cash us up.

perhaps we should set up a website or something on this. plan a protest? 150,000 vehicles use the day minimum. based on cars, that would mean takings of in excess of 70 million a year.

I have moved my business recently from near the Blackwall Tunnel, this has bad queues due to the weight of traffic. I am now situated close to The Dartford Crossing that suffers from a different problem, an inept government that fails to take our money at the tolls quick enough, and in the process causes 20 mile tail backs! The government failing to take our money quick enough is an extremely unusual situation in this country, its one I really wish I didn’t have to witness on a regular basis. Scrap the tolls!
