A homeworking job earning more than £450 a week seems too good to be true and, in the case of a textile company, it is.
In Taiwan-based Sheepon Textile Company's advert, which appeared in News Shopper - sister paper of Local London - on May 16, residents are invited to email for information about a "very easy and straightforward job".
Applicants are told they will receive payments from customers around the world and will be able to take 10 per cent of the money for themselves.
But cheques sent to people for their work are counterfeit and cannot be cashed.
Lloyds TSB became aware of the money transfer scam when two customers came into its branch in New Road, Gravesend, hoping to cash the cheques for large sums of money.
A bank spokesman said: "The victims responded to an advert in the paper but you have to be suspicious of this kind of thing.
"You do not get anything for nothing and if it sounds too good to be true then it probably is."
A police spokesman said: "Do not respond to these kinds of emails, letters or adverts in any form, as they will undoubtedly result in a request to provide fees up front under various excuses to cover payments.
"Under no circumstances should you send any money in response to these mailings."
