Tube 'graffiti mission' death pair named

Two men who died on a "graffiti mission" at an east London depot have been named as Daniel Elgar, 19, and Bradley Chapman, 21.

The men, both from Essex, died after being hit by a District line train at Barking depot on Friday night.

It believed they were running after being spotted by security guards on the track.

Passengers were led along the tracks and to nearby Upney station.

Chief Superintendent Paul Crowther said there was "no suggestion" that the men were being chased by security when the accident occurred.

"What happened to cause that is part of our inquiries, but I am confident to say there is no suggestion that they were being chased," he said.

"The loss of these two young lives is made even more tragic, and more difficult for their families to bear by the fact these deaths could have been avoided.

"For untrained people the railway is an extremely dangerous environment and had these young men not been on the railway they would still be alive today."

The British Transport Police are now reviewing CCTV footage and interviewing witnesses.

The investigation is focusing on events leading up to the tragic incident and what the two men were doing on the railway at the time.

"This incident highlights how dangerous trespass is on the railway. Those who are determined to gain access to the railway are putting their lives at risk," Mr Crowther added.

The others, aged 23 and 25, were arrested for questioning by police before being released on bail.

The gang is reported to have planned on "bombing" the station with graffiti, covering as many surfaces as possible with graffiti.

A large "bombing" incident occurred at Camden Town on Christmas Day, as a large graffiti crew caused over £20,000 of damage by spraying paint on the walls and electronic timetables.

Counter-culture graffiti artists like the Bristol-based Banksy have found a massive audience in the young urban population, feeding off of increased exposure in films and video games.

London Underground spends £20 million annually on graffiti removal, by its own estimates.

In 2005/06, 799 cases were reported on the London Underground alone.

So they got killed being where they should not have been. Let that be a lesson to all. How come no sympthay for the poor driver who witnessed this terrible incident?

To the person who commented 'so they were killed somewhere they shouldn't have been.'

One of the victims was a very good friend of mine, it offends me to hear a comment like that when my friend is dead. I'm sure his family wouldn't appreciate it either.

We all know they shouldn't have been there, stating the obvious is helping no one at the moment.

Brad was a great person and although he was doing wrong, does not deserve to be remembered as a vandel.

I agree with LR, i also knew brad but only through graffiti, i never met him although i did contact him and i was aware of all his art. he was not a vandel and he seemed like a truely nice person. rip brad aka ozone, it was a terrible event. but certainly not justice.

its really sad to hear these two young artists had died in the yard. i used to write graffiti and painted at barking depot many times around 89 and early 90's, so their deaths resonates volumes. my graf partner and i had been chased out once and got away, so i also know how they felt when trying run. sad they'd died so young for something they were passionate about. push1.com

Of course no-one deserved to die for this.

But they should not have been vandalising the trains.

As Mary said, what about the trauma that the train driver will be going through? He too is an unwilling victim of this terrible incident.
(and the security guard).

It is a tragedy for people so young to die when they still had so much life in front of them.

I hope that if anyone is saying prayers for the dead they will also remember the traumatised living.

I also hope that those who vandalise trains in this way will remember the deceased - and think twice before doing the same again. Otherwise next time it might be them. Something that no-one wants to happen.

I USED TO WRITE IN THE MID 90'S AND CAN TRULY SAY THAT THESE TWO WRITERS WERE DOING WHAT THEY ENJOYED AT THE TIME OF THEIR DEATH IT IS A GREAT LOSS TO THEIR FAMILIES AND FRIENDS NONE THE LESS THERE WOULD BE NO DOUBT THAT THEY WERE CHASED ITS NOT AS IF THEY EMPLOY SECURITY TO STAND AND WATCH YOU PIECE THE TRAIN IS IT?? REST IN PEACE

they will have been chased by the security guards, no doubt about it, they will more than likely have been chased back onto the tracks into the path of a train, this sickens me, RIP.

I’m sure everyone will agree what a great tragedy it is for two young people to have lost their lives in this way. Although I'm unable to sympathise with the need to daub graffiti on our transport infrastructure I can empathise with those grieving the deceased. I also have compassion for the driver who must have been traumatised by this incident and to the security staff who were simply doing their job: both parties cannot be apportioned any blame.

In the circumstances I don't feel this is the right place for an argument into the wrongs of graffiti and its consequences. What I will say is that I associate graffiti with young delinquents who lack responsibility. Both these individuals were of a responsible adult age. It saddens me that they seemed to have lost their way in life when they should have been forging out prospects for themselves. Perhaps the only good thing to come out of this will be that others will take notice - the tube network is an extremely dangerous place. Is a can of spray paint really worth your life?

It's such a sad loss and he was way too young for his time to be up. My thoughts go out to his family, i just hope they can take some comfort in knowing how well liked he was and that it may stop others taggers taking unnecessary risks. Rest in Peace Brad. x

A graffiti artist once told me that graffiti artists never die's, thats one thing i believe to be true, they live on in their art one of the things they love the most. i have seen alot of ozone's work and it really made me stop and think if i have 1% of the respect that both of you have from people in the graffiti world then i will leave this world a happy lady.

I no you guys will never be forgotten in the graffiti world, within a few weeks of what happened so many people tagged and panited your names, some from close friends and some from people that you never got the chance to meet you.

as a graffiti artist. we all know there is a risk element. if there was no risk, we wouldnt do graffiti. the best graffiti artists take the most risks.........
we (graffiti artists) quite literally see the train tracks as 'our' playground... every graffiti artist knows the risks of the train tracks - they also know the stories of those that have died on them..... and we all say to ourselves, "it wont happen to me or anyone i know, its a rare thing to happen" and then one day one someone does die on the train tracks. and its not you. but your close friend. then you know how real it is. how enevitable it was. because all your friends do graffiti. youve been doing it for 5 - 20 years more. dicing with death all that time someone you know well sometime is gonna die if your a graffiti artist. its a lesson you only learn when its to late. when its your life. graffiti is a beautiful crime if your gonna call it a crime.... graffiti can make your life or take your life. rest in peace all the fallen soldiers. r.i.p HATE
