BUCKS: Rally to save post office
Rallying to save Naphill Post Office
Rallying to save Naphill Post Office

Naphill's Member of Parliament and councillors joined residents in their battle to save a post office in the area on Friday.

The closure plans for Buckinghamshire will not be announced until June but worried residents are convinced the Main Road branch is set to go. More than 30 people braved the cold weather to attend a rally at the post office and were joined by David Lidington MP.

Bucks County Councillor Richard Pushman and district councillors David Carroll and John Gibbs were also there to show support. Mr Lidington, MP for Aylesbury, last year pledged to fight any branch closure in his constituency.

He said: "Most people in villages like Naphill and Walters Ash do have cars. But many elderly and disabled people and mothers with young children do not.

"For them to have to trek into High Wycombe or Princes Risborough just to visit the post office would be an inconvenient and expensive journey Mr Lidington said post offices were suffering because people are now paying for more services online and by direct debit.

advertisementThe Post Office this week refused to confirm whether the branch would be included in the closure programme, to be announced on June 17.

Cllr Pushman said: "It has always been here as long as I can remember.

"It really is at the heart of the village, not only geographically but socially. The footfall here is probably higher than most post offices in the area."

Cllr Carroll, Wycombe District Councillor for Greater Hughenden, added: "It is all about the community and it is the only contact the young people and the elderly have got. That is going to be swept away by the Labour Government."

It was announced last year that up to 2,500 branches may be closed as part of its Network Change Programme'.

The plans will be finalised after its consultation ends on July
