Post Office closures challenged in High Court
The Greater London Authority has taken its campaign to force the Post Office to reconsider closing 171 London-wide branches to the High Court.
The GLA is seeking a judicial review based on the Post Office's failure to allow adequate time for a full consultation on the closures.
If the review is successful, it will force Post Office Limited to extend the consultation period.
According to GLA figures, since 2001 there has been a 45 per cent reduction in the number of post offices open in London while at the same time the number of people living and working in the capital has increased.
The number of post offices has declined 34 per cent nationally and 45 per cent in London since 2001.
A spokesperson for the Greater London Authority said: "Post offices closures have had a disproportionate effect on London. The action that is being taken today at the High Court is to protect local people and local communities and reflects our commitment to act promptly on behalf of Londoners."
