Richard Barnes AM receives the petition from the manageress of The Avenue post office

The Tory candidate for the Ealing and Hillingdon Greater London Assembly seat is urging residents to have their say over planned post office closures.

The consultation over post offices closes tomorrow, and Richard Barnes, the current Assembly member, wants residents to write to the Post Office to protest at the proposals which would see eight branches in Ealing shut.

Speaking as he collected a petition signed by nearly 1,000 people from the post office in The Avenue, West Ealing, he said: "Post offices are the cement which holds together communities.

"Although they are mainly used by older people this makes them even more important as they are the people least able to travel further to access these services.

"I'm very much encouraging people to put their views in as Ealing seems to have been hit far worse than many other London Boroughs."

The Avenue branch is located inside a branch of newsagents Martin's, but the company is not protesting the planned closure.

Mr Barnes continued: "The manageress is constrained by the company policy, but that does not mean local people can't get in and help."
