HARROW: Post Office consultation "meaningless"

Councillors have criticised the post office closure consultation as "meaningless", and say the process has left them in "an untenable position".

In a draft letter to Post Office Ltd (POL), Harrow councillors have criticised the way branches have been chosen for closure, and the way the company does not seem to have listened to councils in previous consultations.

They wrote: "The actual number of closures being planned is static. This places councils, and others who wish to respond to the consultation, in an untenable position.

The consultation has given local people an expectation that, if they represent their views to POL strongly enough, POL will reconsider the closure decision.

"As we have seen this is not the case. In the context we consider that the consultation process is essentially meaningless."

They pointed out the closure plan, revealed in February, has not addressed disability discrimination legislation, it ignores local development plans, and if a post office in the borough is saved, another has to be shut instead.

The letter, signed by councillors Stanley Sheinwald and Mitzi Green, chairman and vice chair of the overview and scrutiny committee, will be sent to POL if it is agreed at a meeting on Tuesday, April 1.

The consultation process for post office closures is due to finish on Wednesday, April 2, with five branches in Harrow under threat.
