Post Office apologises for helpline error
Post Office Ltd has apologised after its customer helpline gave the wrong date for the end of the public consultation on proposed branch closures.
The helpline wrongly told Tooting MP Sadiq Khan that the consultation started in April. In fact it started in February and finishes on April 2.
Mr Khan called the helpline when he first heard rumours about post office closures. He was misinformed, and then told the wrong information a second time when he called to double check.
Mr Khan said: "It is a good job I triple checked; otherwise we may have missed out on the consultation altogether.
"I am concerned that other local residents may also have been misinformed. I know that local residents are suspicious of how genuine the consultation process is. This is one of the reasons I am undertaking my own consultation.
"If anyone else has been given incorrect information or has concerns about the helpline, they should get in touch with me."
Post Office Ltd has now appointed mystery customers to call the helpline and check they are getting the right facts.
Four sub-post offices in Furzedown, Balham and Wandsworth Common are under public consultation and proposed for closure.
