Boris to push for extending Oyster card use

Mayor Boris Johnson is to meet up with railway companies in the next few weeks to push for all overground train stations in the capital to allow Oyster cards.

The announcement came as Mr Johnson confirmed a deal between First Great Western and Transport for London that will see passengers using the train firm able to use Oyster cards at main line stations from September.

Johnson also said the summit meeting between himself and train bosses would happeb before the summer.

"Completing the roll out of Oyster, improvements to services, station security and passenger safety will all be on the agenda as we work together to improve London's rail services," he said.

"Transport for London is investing £40m in new Oyster equipment and, we will be working with the Train Operating Companies to agree their deals and open up Oyster for all Londoners."

Figures currently show that more than three quarters of all Tube and bus payments in London are now by Oyster card.

In the five years since the introduction of Oyster card, the proportion of cash payments on the Tube and buses has fallen to just three per cent.

Transport Commissioner, Peter Hendy, said: "With 17m cards issued since its introduction Oyster has been a huge success in speeding up journeys and cutting down on queues on the Tube, buses and national rail.

"As this agreement shows, we are working hard with ATOC and the Train Operating Companies so that National Rail better serves Londoners, not only with Oyster but with better services and improved safety and security".

What about overground services leading into London? My station has been in a tiswas about Oyster Cards for ages as they won't sell them there.

I don't want to have problems and be accused of trying to fiddle the system if there is a lack of uniform travel systems.

I live just outside London in Watford and we have a very good link into Euston. I travel in quite often and this is why I want to know.
