Barnet's over 55s enjoyed free exercise classes as part of a scheme to get older people fit and healthy.

Saracen’s Sensations cheerleaders and flanker Justin Melck cheered on participants taking part in Age UK’s Gym Open Day 2012 at David Lloyd in High Road, North Finchley today.

Visitors enjoyed a range of activities including a Hatha Yoga class and took advantage of the facilities including a pool and gym.

As well as encouraging people to improve their fitness, Age UK also offered advice on health and general well-being.

Sandra Turner, 60, said: “It is really important for us to keep active. Fun, social things to join in with make it so much easier.”

Open Gym Day is a nationwide initiative, encouraging over 55s to join in with the Olympics fitness fever.

Mark Robinson, chief officer at Age UK Barnet said: “Exercise is important whatever our age and gyms have something to offer everyone.

“This is a great opportunity for older people in the borough to rediscover exercise and try out facilities on offer.”
