A property developer from Barnet was “disgusted” to find that Barnet Hospital would not accept his offer to turn run-down land into extra parking for the hospital.

Dean Weinberg, of Fairfax Property, wants to turn the land, next to the hospital, into an extra car park and has offered to lease the land from the hospital, and to share the profits from parking charges with it.

Mr Weinberg believed that, as the hospital is known to be short of parking, the offer would be a win-win for all concerned.

However, despite contacting the hospital on a number of occasions his offer has not been accepted.

Mr Weinberg said: “As a taxpayer I am disgusted and I am shocked that they won’t do business with a local businessman.

“I thought that I could do some good for the community while expanding my business.”

The patch of land, which is currently not in use, is about 60 feet by 200 feet and Mr Weinberg believes he could create 60 to 70 parking spaces on it.

Mark Easton, chief executive of Barnet and Chase Farm Hospitals, said: “Before we turn the land into a car park we need to make sure that it isn’t needed for any directly health-related purposes.

“Even if we were to turn the land into a car park we would have to have a competitive selection process, we couldn’t just accept Mr Weinberg’s offer.”

Mr Easton added that the hospital trust is currently undertaking a traffic and transport survey at Barnet Hospital to determine its parking needs.

The results of the survey will be used to support the hospital’s planning application for new development at the Barnet site.

In a statement the hospital said: “The trust will not be in a position to consider the release the land until the outcome of survey and planning application are known.”
