A pop-up university in a disused shop is running a course to help people resolve neighbourly disputes.

The U, based on the lower floor of the St Nicholas Shopping Centre, aims to teach participants how to resolve difficult situations safely and amicably, stopping them escalating into more serious problems.

The new learning session in conflict resolution, called Give and Take, is free and lasts for about 90 minutes and will look at everything from dealing with loud music to tackling neighbour disputes.

Its organisers said preventing such behaviour is often not in the remit of the police but can become damaging to communities and individuals over time.

Tobias Stapf, from The U, said: "We wanted to find a way of engaging members of the local community on the issue and so we developed this quick, hands-on session in partnership with Dfuse to teach useful tips for addressing life’s little nuisances safely and amicably.

"Participants are taught to adopt a Defusing Mind-set which will enable them to keep their cool and prevent difficult situations from escalating into something more serious."

The sessions started on February 18, with a number of weekday and weekend sessions available in February and March.
