Deadline is looming for teenagers to apply to join the first Volunteer Police Cadet unit in the district.

The new voluntary police group will aim to reduce youth crime and provide opportunities for young people to positively engage with their community.

The Volunteer Police Cadets are inviting people aged 13 to 18 to give their time in the new group, when it starts in Chigwell next month (September 8).

The unit, which will be based at the Limes Farm Community Hall in Limes Avenue, will be one of three across Essex.

It aims to reduced youth offending, promote understanding of policing and improve public confidence in the police by teaching young people of all backgrounds about work done by officers.

As well as the first wave of new cadets, the unit is inviting adults to volunteer as leader of the group.

To apply as a cadet or a leader, email volunteer.police.cadets@essex.pnn.police.uk before Friday (August 7).
