The housing crisis will worsen as more than 12,500 social housing properties could be sold across the borough.

Enfield’s housing associations risk losing 9,078 properties under the Government’s right-to-buy scheme, and a third of Enfield’s council housing could be forcibly sold without guaranteed replacements.

Sadiq Khan, a London mayoral candidate, calculated the number of affordable homes at risk in each London borough using new figures from the National Housing Federation.

He said: “We all know that London has a chronic housing crisis – we simply don’t have enough social housing for people to rent.

“The Government's solution is not to build more affordable homes in Enfield, instead they want to sell them off.”

Although the Government is yet to publish its housing bill, Mr Khan said there is a good idea what will be in it and is proposing an amendment to protect social housing by guaranteeing replacements for any property sold.

The current government plan is to compensate housing associations with proceeds from selling the most valuable third of council housing.

Mr Khan said: “I think this is totally wrong-headed and will only make London’s housing crisis worse.”
