UNDER-THREAT Chase Farm Hospital was the scene of another protest from opponents to cuts on Tuesday.

About 35 members of the North East London Council of Action (NELCA) gathered near to the maternity department, which is facing the axe under controversial re-configuration plans, for a seven-hour demonstration with the aim of sending a clear message to health bosses at Enfield Primary Care Trust (PCT).

NELCA secretary Bill Rogers noted that mid-wives who work at the medical centre and a consultant joined the picket in a show of solidarity.

He said: "It went really well. We want to stop all cuts and closures to London hospitals."

NELCA is an offshoot of train drivers' union ASLEF. It is opposing cuts at hospitals located close to the railway lines on which its members operate day and night.

There are currently five options on the table for the future of Chase Farm Hospital, which is in the Ridgeway.

Four propose that women and children's services be axed, while three advocate the closure of the casualty department.

A recently added fifth stipulates no change at all.
