With just over two weeks before election night it is impossible to call which party will come up trumps in Gravesham, as a keenly-contested three-horse race hots up.

Last week Gravesend was visited by senior Tory figures Prime Minister David Cameron and Justice Secretary Chris Grayling as the party tries to cling on to the seat for a third successive term.

The Prime Minister appeared at the weekend's Vaisakhi celebrations, accompanied by his wife Samantha, donning an orange padka headscarf as he visited the town's Sikh temple - Guru Nanak Darbar Gurdwara.

Labour candidate Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi said the visit was a sign Gravesham is slipping from the Conservative party's grasp.

Meanwhile Adam Holloway, who has been the constituency's MP for the last 10 years, suggested the rise of UKIP could help hand victory to Labour.

UKIP candidate Sean Marriott refuted this, writing off the Labour party and saying there are only really two parties in contention.

The latest YouGov poll gives the Conservative party a range of 34.2 to 46.5 per cent, Labour 24.9 to 36.4 per cent and UKIP 21.3 to 32.3 per cent.

Mr Singh Dhesi told News Shopper: "The Tory leadership have had to bring in senior Tory figures, and I think it just illustrates just how tightly contested the constituency is.

"I've been putting in a lot of hard work over the last few years with other party members and it is good to see senior Tory leadership here taking that into account.

"They've come in at the last minute to try and keep their seat."

Mr Holloway agreed the race could be a close call.

He said: "What really annoys me is when politicians come on TV and say we are going to win.

"The people have their say, they will make up their minds on the day.

"Quite honestly I have no idea how it is going to go."

Mr Holloway warned UKIP voters may inadvertently hand the seat to Labour.

He added: "What makes it very unpredictable is UKIP. The presence of UKIP here could well allow the Labour candidate in.

"I am quite surprised with UKIP getting such an easy ride from voters.

"The only reason we may end up getting Labour in (government) with the SNP is UKIP."

Meanwhile UKIP candidate Sean Marriott said he thinks there are only two parties in the race for Gravesham: UKIP and the Conservatives.

He said: "We are getting a great reception from all sections of the community.

"A lot see the connection between the EU and the most problematic issues in Gravesham.

"In my opinion it is between UKIP and the Tories, although you can never guess what the electorate will do on the day, they could surprise us all."
