Today has been dubbed one of the worst ever days on the Central line of London Underground.

Passengers have suffered two major problems on the line which passes through some of the busiest stations on the network.

The first came when an engineering train derailed at Holland Park just after midnight.

This led to the line being closed between White City and Marble Arch until lunchtime, with severe delays on the rest of the line.

Just 20 minutes after this section of track reopened, another part of the line between Holborn and Leytonstone had to close after a woman was hit by a train at Liverpool Street.

By mid-afternoon there had been severe delays on the line since the start of the day, with some 45-minute journeys taking up to three hours.

Platforms became so packed this morning that Wanstead and South Woodford stations had to be closed. Many passengers switched to other lines, only to find trains there jammed full as well.

Passengers have taken to Twitter, such as Francis Bankie who wrote: "This is probably the worst the Central line has ever been."

He added staff did "a great job given the exceptional circumstance".

Tuesday was the second successive day of disruption on the Underground. Three Tube lines suffered delays in the morning rush-hour on Monday and there have been a number of other mornings lately when services have been disrupted.

London Underground apologised for today’s Central line disruption, while the Rail Accident Investigation Branch said they were looking into the derailment.

It is believed that the driver of the derailed train suffered head injuries while other staff on the train suffered whiplash injuries.
