Officers have urged Elmbridge councillors to formally object to plans for Weylands Treatment Works.

The submission to build Weylands Treatment Works, which has been revised, will be discussed at a sub-committee meeting following officers' recommendations.

Officers believe an objection should be sent to Surrey County Council, due to concerns about highway safety and inadequate infrastructure, impact on local businesses and greenbelt, land contamination and the impact on air quality.

Mick Flannigan, of Rydens Road, said: "I'm sure our Elmbridge councillors will vote against it, as the latest proposals are not significantly different from those which were thrown out by Surrey County Council last year. The existing waste operation at Weylands is bad enough."

Following the first application, a petition of 2,500 signatures and 700 letters of objection were delivered to councillors, convincing them to refuse it in April 2014.

Weylands No Way, a group against the development in Molesey Road, Walton, set up a second petition to fight the second application.

Councillor Andrew Kelly, representing Walton Ambleside, said: "Walton Conservative councillors, working with Weylands No Way, started this petition to show that our community's concerns about this proposal remains as strong as they did the first time."

A Clean Power spokesman said: "The application provides a unique opportunity to transform a site allocated for waste recycling in the Surrey Waste Plan into a modern, high-tech estate with a suite of planning conditions to ensure all operations are within environmental limits."

The report will be presented to the north area planning sub-committee on Monday, April 13, at Esher Civic Centre.
