An international football tournament will take place to commemorate the 1914 Christmas truce between English and German troops fighting in the trenches.
The two-day tournament, at The Hive Stadium, in Canons Park, will feature English and German under-11 academy teams including Arsenal, Manchester United and Bayern Munich.
Barnet FC and Hampstead FC will also take part in the tournament, which will be the first of its kind, on February 21 and 22.
Lars Nitschke, whose son plays for Hampstead FC and who is helping organise the tournament, said: “Everyone is delighted to take part. It’s almost impossible to get these sort of clubs involved normally.
“This is a huge opportunity for the children. Everybody is excited, they cannot wait. It’s a dream come true for all the players.”
Organisers behind the tournament are appealing for support, after a major sponsor pulled out, and have set up a crowdfunding site at www.indiegogo.com/projects/hampstead-fc-football-tournament--2
All the money raised from the competition will go to the Make-A-Wish Foundation and Barnet Hospital’s children ward.
