Anyone planning to use Wimbledon station over the coming weekends is in for a shock as there will be no trains until mid February due to major engineering work.

Trains will not be running to London Waterloo during weekends in January and February from many south west London stations due to the £7m track maintenance works in Wimbledon.

The work began at the weekend, with every rail platform at Wimbledon station cordoned off with barriers and notices about replacement bus services operating in place of trains.

Wimbledon Times:

Dozens of shocked commuters gathered around the boards to look for alternative routes to their destinations.

The track closures will run every weekend until February 15.

No trains will run between Clapham Junction and Surbiton or between Clapham Junction and Kingston via Wimbledon during weekends until the middle of February.

Other parts of the network may also be subject to engineering work over the same weekends.

All suburban routes through Wimbledon will be replaced by buses for some or all of the journey.

Long distance routes to Exeter or Bristol, Weymouth and Portsmouth which also pass through Wimbledon will be diverted while the works are taking place.

There will be revised departure and arrival times and alterations to the stopping points on most routes.

Journey times may be extended by up to 60 minutes, South West Trains has said.

A spokesperson said: "Our engineering teams will be replacing 12 sets of points (used to cross trains between different lines) positioned to the west of Wimbledon station.

"The infrastructure in the area dates back to the 1970’s and is now at the end of its working life.

"Due to the sheer number of trains which pass through the Wimbledon area, speed restrictions or other problems here can cause delays and cancellations right across the network.

"This work will improve reliability and punctuality of trains across this vital part of our route."

Many passengers took to twitter to vent their frustrations at the delays and cancellations at the weekend.

Due to the large number of alterations to services a special timetable for individual routes has not been published.
