Haydon the Womble, AFC Wimbledon's mascot, is calling on people to help make Christmas special for a brave boy losing his battle with cancer.

Epsom boy Ollie Lovis, aged three and a half, went to America for treatment this year and initially it looked as though the tumour had been killed off.

But unfortunately the latest scan showed that the tumour has grown and his family have been given the devastating news that he only has weeks to months to live.

His family have asked for people to support a charity, Momentum, which is fundraising to improve Epsom Hospital’s children’s ward.

On Friday the Womble said: "After hearing of the very sad news this week, all I could think of was what can I do to help Ollie (as well as his little sister, mum and dad) have a special Christmas together, one that looks very likely unless there is some sort of miracle, being the last together."

The Womble first met Ollie when the little boy was the away mascot for Torquay United during a match at AFC Wimbledon's home ground in January.

He said: "We immediately bonded with each other, it is impossible to not fall in love with Ollie with his infectious smile, despite all he has gone through.

"Ollie is a kind and gentle little boy who loves to chat with everyone he meets. He loves his little sister. He enjoys playing with dinosaurs and also likes being superman."

Last week Haydon set up a blog to reach people who may be able to help or donate something, from as little as a toy dinosaur, to make Christmas special for the family.

Haydon later said he has already received lots of generous donations and is now asking people to instead donate to Momentum.

Ollie is set to visit a fire station and Christmas lights and it is hoped that he will be well enough to lead teams out when AFC Wimbledon play Liverpool in the new year.

The Womble said: "The family are actually going to celebrate Christmas on Sunday, December 21, as Ollie starts a trial drug on Monday December 22, and they fear he may not be well enough to celebrate on Christmas Day, so we literally have a week to make this happen."

A fundraising website was set up to help raise money to send Ollie to the US for proton therapy in February and its current total stands at £28,824.

The last post on the website said: "Unfortunately we have just had the news that Ollie's tumour has restarted growing. There is now no hope for cure and he has just months to live.

"Thank you to all who fundraised to help us to give him the very best chance of cure.

"The money that remained from previous fundraising will now be used towards any treatments that might help or to help make the little time he has left an enjoyable one.

"We may also need to use the money to help pay bills as we have already had a lot of time off work for his previous treatment and it is likely that finances will get tight.

"Any money not used for Ollie will go to Momentum-Epsom branch to help improve facilities on the children's ward at Epsom Hospital for children like Ollie and their families.

"Thank you for all your support for Ollie and us all."
