A community centre that was burnt to the ground in an arson attack is set to be replaced.

Plans have been unveiled for a new building next door to the Old Barn Community Centre, in Tarling Road, East Finchley.

The building will include facilities for the Somali Bravenese Welfare Association, to replace the community centre the group used in Coppetts Road, Muswell Hill, which was destroyed in an arson attack in June 2013.

Times Series:

Last month, the Charity Commission issued an order to appoint new trustees for the Old Barn, after an investigation into complaints that people were denied access to it.

The proposals, if approved, will see the community centre built as an extension to the Old Barn centre, which is due to be repaired.

The issue was discussed at last night’s assets, regeneration and growth committee.

Further discussions will take place with community groups and people living nearby before plans are submitted in spring next year, with the new building due to be completed in 2016.

Councillor Richard Cornelius, leader of Barnet Borough Council, said: “We are still at an early stage but I am sure we can provide something which all members of the local community will be able to make the most of.”
