A partially sighted 83-year-old woman was robbed as she loaded shopping into the back of her car.
Her attacker, 33-year-old Kamran Shafiq, of South Lane, New Malden, grabbed the bag from her trolley in the Waitrose car park in Worcester Park on Tuesday, November 11.
The woman, who was with a female friend, had withdrawn £50 that she placed inside her handbag.
Sutton police said that when Shafiq grabbed the handbag the victim cried out: "Stop him - he’s got my bag."
Another man who was in the car park at the time,jumped into a car and followed Shafiq, relaying the location to police over the course of several minutes.
Safiq was arrested and on De cember 9 was sentenced to 26 weeks in prison after pleading guilty to stealing the bag at Croydon Magistrates’ Court.
He was also ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £80.
