A consultation on the future of Barnet's leisure centres has ended.

The authority has asked people for their views on the future of its sports and leisure centres as it prepares to retender its contracts.

Although plans initially included moving Finchley Lido, in the Great North Leisure Park, Chaplin Way, North Finchley, to the grounds of the Finchley Memorial Hospital, the council says this is “unlikely” to go ahead.

A feasibility study into the future Copthall, Burnt Oak, Church Farm leisure centres and how much money will be required to keep them in an acceptable state for the next 20 years is also currently being carried out.

Labour councillor Geoff Cooke said: “If moving the Finchley Lido to the Finchley Memorial Hospital wasn’t a desired option, why was it included in a serious consultation?”

The consultation’s results will be published on February 17.

During the consultation period, Labour councillors and those who work in leisure centres were angry to be turned away from a workshop on October 18 about the future of the sport facilities.

Cllr Cooke added: “It’s not transparent at all. If they didn’t want us in there, they should have at least published the minutes.

“Those who work in the leisure centres especially deserve to be kept up to date with what’s going on.”

But in a statement, the authority said there was a “misunderstanding” regarding the nature of the workshop that took place, and that had councillors been allowed in, it would no longer have been “statistically representative”.

It added: “As part of the consultation we have asked residents what sports and leisure activities they wish to take part in, what activities they think will support the general health of the borough, and are our leisure centres providing the right offer in the right place.

“The project should see a substantial investment in improving these facilities, and will be considered by policy and resources committee in February taking account of the consultation feedback and feasibility studies for each site.

“It is not expected that there will be any proposal to move or close Finchley Lido.”
