Weekend trains to Waterloo from Wimbledon Station will be cancelled during the first two months of next year.

Almost all South West Trains which usually pass through Wimbledon will be diverted while engineers carry out maintenance work on the tracks.

The disruption will start in January and continue over weekends, bar one, until February 15.

There will also be no Thameslink service from Wimbledon to Sutton.

A spokesman for the South West Trains-Network Rail Alliance, which is responsible for the £7m maintenance works, said: "The infrastructure in the area dates back to the 1970’s and is now at the end of its working life.

"Due to the sheer number of trains which pass through the Wimbledon area, speed restrictions or other problems here can cause delays and cancellations right across the network.

"This work will improve reliability and punctuality of trains across this vital part of our route."

All suburban routes through Wimbledon will be replaced by buses for some or all of the journey.
