Two "inspirational" charity campaigners were congratulated by the Prime Minister for raising thousands of pounds and improving their community.

Matthew Kayne and Simon Davis, who live in Rela Goldhill Lodge in Golders Green, were presented with letters from David Cameron by Finchley and Golders Green MP Mike Freer yesterday.

Mr Kayne raised thousands of pounds for the Limes Avenue care home in 2012, when he stepped out of his wheelchair to complete a mile-long walk from the lodge to Café Nero.

The 31-year-old has also campaigned for improved access for disabled people, and achieved success when Starbucks in Golders Green responded to his request for step-free access to the shop.

He said: “I am so delighted to get the letter, it means so much to me. It makes me very proud. I am going to put it on the wall in a frame. I would like to speak to him about disabilities, and how the Government could help disabled people more.

“I love living here, they support me so much. I also love helping out people in the community. I want to encourage everybody to do the same.”

Mr Davis, who was born with athetoid cerebral palsy, raised more than £7,000 for Jewish Care last year, when he took part in a skydive.

The 39-year-old graduated with a first class degree in marketing from Middlesex University, and works as a part-time volunteer in Jewish Care’s fundraising and marketing department. He also runs a successful greeting card business called ‘Simon Says’ from which all profits go to the care home.

Mr Davis said: “I feel extremely honoured. I was really surprised. I am grateful to live here.”

Susan Anhum, manager of Rela Goldhill Lodge, said: “They are very inspirational people, and it’s a way of them giving something back to the community and not just being passive. I think for people with disabilities you don’t just have to sit down, you can reach your aspirations and dreams.”

Daniel Carmel-Brown, director of fundraising and marketing, said: “We are very proud of them. They are role models for everyone in the community. They are determined to live their lives to the full.”

Mr Freer praised the care home for the support it gives residents. He said: “You only have to visit once to realise what a wonderful organisation it is. The quality of the care is amazing. They are such engaging characters.”
