A grandmother was left “looking like she’d been battered and bruised” after she tripped on an uneven pavement.

Rita Edwards, of Christchurch Avenue, Finchley, was on one of her daily walks when she stumbled and broke her shoudler.

A passer-by called an ambulance and the 91-year-old was rushed to Barnet General Hospital where she is still recovering.

Since June, various people have lodged complaints with Barnet Borough Council about the uneven surfaces, but nothing was done to repair them.

Mrs Edwards’s daughter, Hazel Tansley, who lives in London Colney, is furious about the lack of action.

She said: “She could smashed her hip or injured her head – as it stands, we’re lucky she didn’t sustain more injuries.

“My mother is badly shaken up by this and she looks like she’s been battered and bruised. Her shoulder is severely broken.

“She’s usually a very independent person and she lives alone, but she will need someone to help her now. I hope it doesn’t knock her confidence.”

Mrs Tansley, 56, is now planning on taking time out of her job as an accounts manager to care for her mother when she comes out of hospital.

Mrs Edwards was widowed in June but keeps active by taking daily walks and attending weekly sports sessions.

Her daughter, a mother-of-two, is now urging the authority to repair the pavements as soon as possible.

She added: “It’s completely unacceptable. It’s a matter of public safety and this isn’t something that should be ignored. I am angry about this as it could have been avoided.”

A statement from the council said: “Obviously,  are very sorry to hear of Mrs Edwards’ fall. We are currently investigating the matter.”
