Hundreds of people got together to play in a football tournament in memory of late councillor Gam Gurung.

The Nepalese community rallied round to organise the second annual tournament held at the Tooting and Mitcham Football Club on Saturday, August 30, as a tribute to Councillor Gam Gurung who died last year.

A total of 16 teams who were from all over the country took part, cheered on by family and friends from the sidelines.

Coun Gurung’s wife Kabita was on hand to present the trophies at the end of the day.

Organiser Deependra Lama said: "Gam would have liked it, he used to come a few years ago and motivate us and play at Morden Football Club.

"He used to be a striker."

Coun Gurung, of Colliers Wood ward, died last year after a six month battle with cancer.

A former Ghurkha solder, Mr Gurung grew up in the Himalayas and later founded the South London Nepalese Ghurkha Association (SLNGA) championing the rights of Ghurkhas in the UK.

Merton Council leader Stephen Alambritis and Councillor Maxi Martin joined the Nepalese community for the event.
