A six-year-old book-worm won a free lunch and a medal as part of a summer reading challenge.

Keen reader Rose Peeks, six, received her medal, certificate and a free lunch at Chipotle Mexican Grill in Wimbledon to celebrate her efforts getting through six books during the summer holidays.

Thousands of young readers have their heads buried in books this summer as they take on a summer reading challenge.

More than 10,000 children aged four to 11-years-old have signed up to Merton libraries' Summer Reading Challenge of six library books during the summer months.

Children can read any books they like as long as they are borrowed from a library. If completed before Saturday, September 13, they will receive a medal, certificate and a chance to win a number of prizes.

The youngster who is a pupil at Holy Trinity School, visited Chipotle in Wimbledon Hill Road on Tuesday, August 19, after completing the challenge.

She said: "I have read six books including The Dinosaur That Pooped a Planet, Dog in Boots and Boomer’s Big Surprise.

"I loved reading these books during my summer holidays and I made sure my school friends took part too. My meal at Chipotle was really yummy and I think every kid should join the challenge."

Chipotle is also offering every child who completes the challenge a free meal and the three schools with the most Summer Challenge readers the chance to bring 40 pupils to the Wimbledon restaurant for a tour, guacamole-making demonstration and a free lunch.
