A man in his 40s was taken to hospital on Saturday night with a neck injury after walking into the Monkey Puzzle pub in Chessington with a slit throat.

Terrified diners and drinkers, including families and children, 'froze' when they saw the bloody man walk into the packed pub and ask for help.

The manager of the Monkey Puzzle, a Beefeater Grill pub next to a Premier Inn, declined to comment on the claim, referring calls to Frank PR.

A spokesman for Whitbread, which owns the pub, said: "We are aware of an incident that took place at the Monkey Puzzle Beefeater site on Saturday evening.

"None of our guests were harmed. We are unable to make any further comment at this time‎."

A spokesman for London Ambulance said: "We were called at 7.30pm to an incident on the Leatherhead Road and we sent one ambulance crew to the scene.

"We treated a man reported to be in his 40s for a neck injury and he was taken to St George's Hospital as a priority."
