Kingston Council could splash out more than £2m on refurbishing the borough’s former magistrates’ court in order to bring it back into some form of use.
The courts, below the Guildhall, closed in July 2011 as part of the coalition Government’s budget cuts, and have been empty ever since.
The council is still paying more than £195,000 a year in rates, repairs, maintenance and security, and is keen to bring the space back into productive use.
That could mean spending between £1.5m and £2.1m on remodelling the courts, so that they could be potentially used as additional office space.
A report by the council’s director of place and regeneration proposes carrying out a £300,000 feasibility study into the plans.
The report was due to be discussed last night at the council’s policy and resources committee.
