Trinity Road in Tooting remains closed after a building collapse yesterday evening.
Fire crews were alerted around 2.16pm by a neighbour in Chetwode Road.
Initial reports suggested that scaffolding was precariously balanced and the building - a shop with flats above - was in danger of toppling over.
Wandsworth Council's building inspectors arrived a short time later and after examining the property realised it was in imminent danger of collapse. Within a few moments of their inspection the entire building fell down.
The collapse, which happened just before 4pm, sent rubble and scaffolding across the pavement and red route.
A Transport for London spokesperson said, ''Trinity Road is currently closed between Bellevue Road-Burntwood Lane and Balham High Road because of structural damage to a residential property that has also damaged part of the pavement.

"Engineers are working to repair the problem and the road will be reopened as soon as it is safe to do so.
"Local buses - routes 219, 319 and G1 - are on diversion.''
